Production begins with a melted and consolidated commercially pure titanium ingot, controlled for oxygen, iron, and interstitial elements to hold the soft, ductile character of Grade 2. The ingot is forged and hot-rolled into bar and then into wire rod, the heavier feedstock that will later be drawn down to the finished diameter.
Wire rod is pulled through a sequence of drawing dies that shrink the cross-section and lengthen the wire. Because titanium hardens as it deforms, the line alternates drawing with intermediate annealing that restores softness, letting the wire reach very fine diameters without cracking.
